One Step Forward, Orangutan Case in Pontianak

Mr. Dedi as civil investigator leader from BKSDA (Natural Resources Conservancy Office) Kalimantan Barat declared that legal material from orangutan case on June 21 has been finished and approved by prosecutor (P21). This news is very important because civil investigator finished legal material for orangutan case for first time in Kalimantan. It is mean that orangutan case never reached legal material before. This achievement should be published to other law enforcement officer for lessons learn.

Finishing legal material is important step for wildlife crime case. After legal material has been finished, suspect and evidence will be brought to courtroom. The suspect has been arrested by forest ranger when tried to selling orangutan in Pontianak. This case is joint collaboration between WCU investigation with Yayasan Titian and Yayasan Palung. Our investigation proven there were orangutan traded activity in Pontianak. The result was sent to SPORC (Rapid respond forest ranger) and BKSDA Kalimantan Timur to be followed up.

Orangutan population in Kalimantan and Sumatra has been decreasing by habitat destruction and hunting. Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii) population in North Sumatra and Aceh remain 6,667 individu. Other wise, orangutan population in Kalimantan separated in north Mahakam River (Pongo pygmaeus morio: 4,825 individu), northwest Kalimantan and north side Kapuas River (Pongo pygmaeus: 2,500), and South and Southwest Kalimantan, between Kapuas and Barito (Pongo pygmaeus wurmbii: 34,975 individu).
